And we know the release date now, too!
Ever since news broke about a Proud Family reboot back in 2019, we’ve been waiting (and waiting and waiting) for the new series to finally drop. And soon, that wait will be ovah — The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder will be ready to stream on Disney+ starting February 23!
Besides the return of all our fave OG characters, voiced by the original cast — Penny Proud (Kyla Pratt), Oscar Proud (Tommy Davidson), Suga Mama (Jo Marie Payton), Trudy Proud (Paula Jai Parker), Dijonay Jones (Karen Malina White), and more — this update will also introduce new ones like Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins (Keke Palmer), the girl with two dads; Michael Collins (EJ Johnson), who identifies as gender nonconforming; and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Brown (Asante Blackk).
Story lines this go-round will tackle more current themes, too, such as LGBTQ+ families and social media issues, along with an even closer look at Penny’s teenage years, including dating. “A lot has changed in 20 years,” executive producer Ralph Farquhar said at January 14th’s #TCA22 panel. “We had to tiptoe around certain topics back then.”
The freedom to directly address more subjects isn’t the only thing the creators are hype about: The crew also has more money to work with, which means a theme song refresh (it’s still good though, promise!), upgraded art, and the chance to work with a whole lotta guest stars. Peep this list of just a few that’ll be appearing on the show, as reported by Deadline:
- Lizzo
- Lena Waithe
- Normani
- Gabby Douglas
- Gabrielle Union
- Lil Nas X
- Marsai Martin
- Tiffany Haddish
- + more!
“We’re making this show for an African-American audience,” executive producer Bruce W. Smith said during the #TCA22 panel. “We’re speaking to us.” Watch the latest trailer, released this past Friday, below:
