“Acting is great, but you know what I’m really obsessed with? Design.”
At 17 years old, Marsai Martin has already stacked hella receipts in the entertainment realm — she’s starred as Diane Johnson on black-ish for eight seasons, founded her own company Genius Productions, become the youngest executive producer in history with her movie Little, won multiple NAACP Image Awards, and now, she’s off to tackle a new domain with her Discovery+ original series Remix My Space with Marsai Martin.
Hitting the streamer this past Saturday, January 15, the show blends Marsai’s loves of design and giving back. Along with co-stars designer Tiffany Thompson and carpenter Joanie Sprague, Marsai surprises “amazing teens who are doing incredible things for our world” with the bedroom makeovers of their dreams.
There’s a 15-year-old who started a program at her temple matching preschoolers with senior citizens to create bonds between generations, a 16-year-old who works with people in his community who have special needs, a 14-year-old activist whose nonprofit provides clean drinking water to people in the Philippines, and so many more.
To get an idea of how best to renovate each room, Marsai gets a tour of the “before” by each teen, while her team spends some time with the friends and family who nominated them. Here’s where they get the tea on each person’s style, hobbies, and personality. The results? Let’s just say fire and heart eyes emojis everywhere.
Each episode is just under 25 minutes, and according to Discovery+, the first season will have eight of them.
