Last night’s live production of The Wiz had our timelines lit! Everyone was getting their life and beaming with pride just watching all that #BlackGirlMagic and #BlackExcellence dance across the stage in real time. (Of course, there were some people who, for reasons we’ll never understand, just didn’t get it, but anywayz… *gives a thousand side-eyes.*)
Featuring an all-star cast — Ne-yo, Uzo Aduba, Mary J, Queen Latifah, Common, Amber Riley, David Allen Grier, Stephanie Mills, and Elijah Kelley — and introducing newbie Shanice Williams as Dorothy, The Wiz did an amazing job of remaking the stage play that originally debuted on Broadway back in the 7-5 (there was also a movie version starring Diana Ross that came out in the late ’70s) and updating it for the 1-5. We watched them whip, we watched them nae nae, we caught their uses of today’s slang like “casting shade” and “squad.” Plus, the cast rocked that natural hair — Cowardly Lion’s dreads, tho. And Dorothy’s curly ‘fro? #HairGoals for real.
