This Confederate Flag Takedown is Life!

Bree Newsome, filmmaker, singer, songwriter, freedom fighter, and all around symbol of Black girl magic just did the dang thang.

Early this morning, decked out in professional climbing gear, Bree scaled the 30-foot flagpole on the South Carolina Statehouse grounds, grabbed the flag, and before descending, held it up triumphantly and called out:

“You come against me with hatred and oppression and violence! I come against you in the name of God! This flag comes down today!”

As she neared the end of her dismount, she proudly and bravely said, “The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear?” She continued, “I’m coming down. I’m prepared to be arrested.” And like countless Freedom Riders and other civil rights activists who’ve come before her, she was.

And all we can feel is pride: for her bravery, for her strength, and for her … just everything.
