If you missed Black Girls Rock 2015, which aired last night (Easter Sunday), you missed a BOMB show! (Don’t worry, you know BET will rerun it a hundred times this week, so make sure you catch it then.)
Ciara performed “I Bet.” FLOTUS inspired us and motivated us and just gave us ALL the feels. Estelle sang “Conqueror” from Empire. Fantasia buh-rought it with her rendition of “Mary Don’t You Weep.” Even #TMURDA dropped a few bars for the crowd.
This year, the six main honorees included Jada Pinkett Smith, Erykah Badu, Ava Duvernay, and Cicely Tyson, among others. But they weren’t the only Black girls who rock to be recognized. The three M.A.D. (Making a Difference) Girls also got some MAD props. Peep this:
1. Chental-Song Bembry created the Honey Bunch Kids book series. She writes and illustrates each book, which features Black kids as main characters.
2. Gabrielle Jordan is an entrepreneur and public speaker — and she’s only 15! She founded the ExCEL Youth Mentoring Institute, launched Jewelz of Jordan, and she’s also written the book, The Making of a Young Entrepreneur: A Kid’s Guide to Developing the Mind-Set for Success.
3. Kaya Thomas, a sophomore at Dartmouth College, decided to launch her own tech vlog when she found it hard to find tech vlogs featuring Black people. Besides that, she’s also developed her own app called We Read Too and is a technical mentor with Black Girls Code.
So, how do YOU rock? Tell us in the comments below!
