Besides the excitement of “Glory” winning the Oscar for Best Original Song (yasssss!), the other most talked about thing from the awards show comes straight from the red carpet.
Zendaya’s hair.
Giuliana Rancic, host of Fashion Police, took to her show the Monday after the Oscars to say this about 18-year-old Zendaya’s red carpet dreadlock look:
Oh, yes. You heard right: “I feel like she smells like patchouli oil. Or weed. Yeah! Maybe weed?!”
Like, in real life. She actually said that. And, of course, what would a blatantly racist comment be without the typical “But I’m not racist!” response? Here’s Guiliana’s:

We’re still wondering when “Bohemian chic” became “You stink like weed.” Because … no. If she meant “Bohemian chic,” she would’ve said “Bohemian chic.” And that’s real. We think Zendaya’s hair looks beautiful and is a classy throwback to Denise from The Cosby Show (which Zendaya also confirmed on her Insta). And we said “beautiful” because we mean the actual word “beautiful.” (See how that works, Guiliana? It’s easy!)
Black girls’ hair has been attacked and mocked for centuries and here you have yet another example of that in 2015. There’s just no excuse. No way Giuliana can say, “Oh, I didn’t think that was racist” because, hello.
Z handled it like a boss, though.
What was the first thought that ran through your mind when you heard Guiliana’s comment and then “apology”? What do you think of Zendaya’s response? Speak on it in the comments below!
