It’s hard to believe a whole 20 years have gone by since then 22-year-old Aaliyah Dana Haughton boarded an ill-fated flight from the Bahamas back home to the States. She had just finished filming what became her final music video for “Rock the Boat,” the second single off her third album, Aaliyah.
Throughout the past two decades, there’s been a not-so-well-received TV movie, a highly anticipated M.A.C. makeup line, and hella calls for the late singer’s entire discography to be available for streaming. (Up until five days ago, Spotify only had her debut album, Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number, an album heavily featuring the disgraced R. Kelly, who’s currently facing charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.)
But as of August 20, 2021, Aaliyah’s sophomore album, One In A Million, is also available in the streaming service’s library. And the album rollout will continue over the next couple months:
Why has it taken so long for Babygirl’s recordings to hit the digital space? We’re not exactly sure of all the specifics, but according to CNN, “It’s complicated.”
Regardless, we’re hype for all the upcoming drops, and to commemorate the L-I-Y-A-H on this 20th anniversary of her death, we’ll be streaming the mess out of OIAM for the foreseeable future.
