A New YA Novel Inspired by Black Lives Matter is On Deck to Become a Movie!

By Andréa Butler

You know you’re a straight up #boss when you can land a movie deal for a book that’s not even published yet.

And that’s exactly what author Angie Thomas has done. Her debut novel, The Hate U Give — which isn’t set to be released until next spring — is inspired by the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

Taking its title from Tupac’s “THUG LIFE” tatt, The Hate U Give tells the story of 16-year-old Starr (played by Amandla Stenberg), who witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend.

As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter:

“Thomas’ story follows a 16-year-old girl named Starr who grew up in a poverty-stricken slum, but now attends a suburban prep school. After she witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend, she’s torn between her two very different worlds as she tries to speak her truth.”
