Happy Black History Month!
Eighty-nine years ago this month — way back in the day, in 1926 to be exact — Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week and chose the month of February because it was the month of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays. He hoped that eventually we wouldn’t need a specific week — which later turned into a month — to celebrate Black history because it would be included in the rest of American history.
But, as some of you told us on Twitter, your schools still don’t teach Black history — any time of the year.
Sesi celebrates Black history #allday, #everyday. But this month, we’ll focus on a special theme. (Did you know that every year, Black History Month actually has a theme?) For 2015, it’s “A Century of Black Life, History, and Culture.”
Do you go to a school that celebrates Black History Month? How will you contribute to our legacy?
